Class ELKS - Year 5
Welcome to Year 5
Mrs Laureys and Mrs Singfield would like to welcome you to Year Five Kites Class.
Mrs Laureys will be teaching Monday until Wednesday lunchtime.
Mrs Singfield will be teaching Wednesday afternoon until Friday.
During the week, we will be supported by Mrs Cooper, Mrs Gordon, Miss Habbishaw and Mr Filer.
Please have a look on our class page to see what we have been learning about in Year Five.
Our topic this half term has been ‘A WAY with Waste’.
We have thought and learned about waste, plastic pollution, the impact of waste on the environment and recycling. We read ‘Tuamor the Turtle’ by Jo Earlam and talked to Mrs Earlam about the book both in an author assembly and in class. After this, we wrote our own letters to Mrs Theresa May to persuade her to stop plastic pollution. We researched, designed, planned and made jewellery from plastic waste for our fashion show. Finally, to finish our topic off, we had an amazing trip to the Pinbrook Recycling Centre and the Exeter Energy from Waste Facility.
We have also read ‘Ice Bear’ by Jackie Morris, which told us more about how humans and animals can live together and learn from each other. We wrote our own animal stories based on this brilliant book.
In Science, we have talked about reproduction in plants and animals and had a close look at the different life cycles of various animals.
Next half term our topic will be ‘Our World: Let’s Celebrate’. We will be focusing on ‘Rivers’ in Geography, Buddhism and Christianity in RE, ‘Living Things and Growing Old’ in Science, weaving in Art and enjoying lots of Christmas activities. Our Literacy will include a focus on thesauruses and reading the wonderful ‘The Princess Blankets’ by Carol Ann Duffy.
Far Field will not be starting until after Christmas.
